Vitamins generally cannot be synthesized at all or in amounts sufficient to meet bodily needs and therefore must be obtained from the diet or from some synthetic source. Vitamins are referred to as “essential nutrients”. Historically, as vitamins were discovered they were named in alphabetical order AàE, and in the case of the B-vitamins, subcategorized numerically (B1, B2, B3, B6, and B12).  However, some errors were made during the discovery process and a few of the substances thought to be new vitamins were duplicates of those already existing. A few others turned out quite simply, not to be vitamins at all!  These misnamed chemical substances were deleted from the list leaving gaps in our sequence of vitamins.   Unfortunately these gaps created an opportunity for the unscrupulous marketing of somesupplements promoted as if they were ‘real’ vitamins.

 

We find these non-vitamins added to energy ‘booster’ products and sports beverages, hair and skin care products and frequently they also show up in weight loss pills and potions.  Others are sold as stand alone products. The list of non-vitamins is long, but some of the more common include: acerola, betaine,  hesperidin, inositol, laetrile (aka B-17), lecithin, alpha lipoic acid, MSM , pangamic Acid (aka B-15), PABA and royal jelly.

 

These substances are not necessarily bad for you.  In fact, several are being studied to determine their precise role in the body.  However, the take home point is that these non-vitamins are just that….NOT vitamins!  In other words your body can make what it needs from the raw materials in your diet. Only the ‘true’ vitamins are needed in your diet because your body cannot meet that need alone. 

 

And so my mantra continues: to obtain the vitamins and other essential nutrients needed in your diet for optimal health, keep your focus on consuming less processed and more fresh, whole foods.
